I want us to participate a little
What is our view or understanding about Idolatry.

Idolatry is anything we seek beyond God that it becomes our object of worship or better still.. Anything that replace the roles and image of God in our life is idolatry…
image-worship or divine honour paid to any created object. Paul describes the origin of idolatry in Romans 1:21-25 : men forsook God, and sank into ignorance and moral corruption the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.” An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God.

Bible Text:*Psalm 97:7, Isa. 42:17
Those who worship idols are disgraced— all who brag about their worthless gods— for every god must bow to him. (Psalms 97:7)

Psalms 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
But those who trust in idols, who say, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned away in shame. (Isaiah 42:17)

From the Scriptures above we can see that the only blessing to idol worshippers is shame and backwardness

The first commandment in the Bible assert the unity of God and forbids polytheism, so the second commandment asserts His spirituality and supremacy; and it is a protest against Idolatry and materialism

Idolatry is simply the worship of an idol and of which it is somehow difficult to define an idol

One of the nature of Jehovah God is that He is a jealous God So, if you too are jealous; it is a sign that you resemble Daddy God. But your jealousy should not be devilish

For the following reasons, our God is a jealous God:

  1. He is Holy
  2. He is incomparable (you will notice that couples or lovers becomes jealous once they discover that someone is trying to compete or be compared to them; it is the nature of the father in us)
  3. Because He created all things. Come to think of it, how could the created equate himself (human) or itself (things) with the created
  4. He is supreme-Most high
  5. Because His sovereign has absolute rulership/authority
  6. His love ineffable beyond description
  7. Because He is before all

What is an Idol

I said earlier that it is difficult to define what an idol is but we shall consider it’s definition through the following Scriptures

👉🏼 Things made to represent God. Exodus 32:4
Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” (Exodus 32:4)

👉🏼Anything to which we pray other than the true God. Isa. 45:18-23

👉🏼The God of the heathen, generally made of material things. Psalm 115:2-8
For the Lord is God, and he created the heavens and earth and put everything in place. He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty chaos. “I am the Lord,” he says, “and there is no other. I publicly proclaim bold promises. I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner. I would not have told the people of Israel to seek me if I could not be found. I, the Lord, speak only what is true and declare only what is right. “Gather together and come, you fugitives from surrounding nations. What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save! Consult together, argue your case. Get together and decide what to say. Who made these things known so long ago? What idol ever told you they would happen? Was it not I, the Lord? For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me. Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. I have sworn by my own name; I have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to me.” (Isaiah 45:18-23)

Why let the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes. Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. They have hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound. And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them. (Psalms 115:2-8)

Those 2 Scriptures ahead are talking about the authority of the supreme God, questioning the idol worshippers about their idols

👉🏼 Precious metals. Acts 17:29
👉🏼Heavenly bodies (moon, stars, sun). Deut.4:15-18
👉🏼 Images of man, beasts and other creatures. Rom. 1:22-23
👉🏼 Worshipping of angels (Col. 2:18)
👉🏼 Gratification of the flesh. Col. 3:5
👉🏼 Devils that are worshipped. 2Chron. 11:14-15
And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

(Acts 17:29)
A Warning against Idolatry “But be very careful! You did not see the Lord’s form on the day he spoke to you from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai. So do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form—whether of a man or a woman, an animal on the ground, a bird in the sky, a small animal that scurries along the ground, or a fish in the deepest sea.

(Deuteronomy 4:15-18)
Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. (Romans 1:22-23)

Romans 1:22-23 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, (Colossians 2:18)

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. (Colossians 3:5)

👉🏼 Hypocrisy in the heart. Ezek. 14:1-6
👉🏼Money. Matt. 6:24. Jesus referred to the spirit behind the love of money as mammon. Our heart will be where our investment is
The Levites even abandoned their pasturelands and property and moved to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons would not allow them to serve the Lord as priests. Jeroboam appointed his own priests to serve at the pagan shrines, where they worshiped the goat and calf idols he had made. (2 Chronicles 11:14-15)

The Idolatry of Israel’s Leaders Then some of the leaders of Israel visited me, and while they were sitting with me, this message came to me from the Lord: “Son of man, these leaders have set up idols in their hearts. They have embraced things that will make them fall into sin. Why should I listen to their requests? Tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The people of Israel have set up idols in their hearts and fallen into sin, and then they go to a prophet asking for a message. So I, the Lord, will give them the kind of answer their great idolatry deserves. I will do this to capture the minds and hearts of all my people who have turned from me to worship their detestable idols.’ “Therefore, tell the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent and turn away from your idols, and stop all your detestable sins. (Ezekiel 14:1-6)

If God can cause the spirit of lie to fall on His prophet just to dance to their tone and He (God) called it an idol
It is possible that something approved by God may ultimately turn an idol if it takes the place of worship.

The brazen serpent of Moses was turned into an idol by the Israelites. 2Kings 18:4
2 Kings 18:4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

Research make it know that anything that is contrary to your religion or belief is Idolatry
That is why the Northern Muslims see the southern Muslims as pagans or heathens

If your church kick against make up and you are wearing it, you are an idolater
You don’t take to the advice of your pastor, you don’t obey your group heads; you are an idolater

Take note that the only commandment that attracts God’s punishment is the commandment against idolatry
God said the iniquity will be visited to the 3rd and 4th generation

Which means that you can inherit curse from your great grand parents because of Idolatry and you can also leave the will of curse to your unborn generation

Quickly let us look at the

Factors Aiding Idolatry
1. Foolishness. Rom. 1:22-23
The Bible says that a fool says in his heart that there’s no God.

Foolishness will make a man to forsake the creator and bow down to the tattered cutlasses and iron

Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. (Romans 1:22-23)

  1. Failure to glorify God as God. Roms. 1:21
Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. (Romans 1:21)

  1. Pride and deceit. Col. 2:18
Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, (Colossians 2:18)

Colossians 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Pride is trying to act moreover your ability, living a fake life. Boasting to be what you are not

Pride is trying to act moreover your ability, living a fake life. Boasting to be what you are not

Pride will give birth to deceit. Pride will not allow you to admit your fault and fall, hence causing a cover-up (deceit)

  1. Fear and dismay (Jere. 10:1-2)
Jeremiah 10:1-2 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Fear of taking the right step, fear of any kind will build an idol in your heart. You will want listen to negative voice and God will answer you according to the idol of fear in your heart

The Privilege of Holiness “When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you. When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters, for they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you. … “You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 7:1)

Trying to be another person
Some will want to say “somebody shout hallelujah like Daddy Adeboye
Some will want to speak in tongues like Dr. Eneche and so on (Idol)

  1. Poverty of ideas. Isa. 40:20
Or if people are too poor for that, they might at least choose wood that won’t decay and a skilled craftsman to carve an image that won’t fall down! (Isaiah 40:20)

Not having what to deliver has made some people to seek help from Egypt. Operating in yesterday’s glory has made some ministers to run to shrine for power

  1. Custom Jere. 44:15-19
Some people are so rigid and dogmatic, sticking to old style, fashion. This is the way we have been doing, it is our custom e.t.c
Except if the old fashion is about the old time religion, the ancient landmark, it’s that which I support not to change

Why does God hate Idolatry
1. It draws our heart and focus away from God
2. It enslaves by focusing on works rather than grace
3. It dishonors God by attempting to create mental image of substitute

  1. It makes people religious but not godly. Amos 4:4-6
“Go ahead and offer sacrifices to the idols at Bethel. Keep on disobeying at Gilgal. Offer sacrifices each morning, and bring your tithes every three days. Present your bread made with yeast as an offering of thanksgiving. Then give your extra voluntary offerings so you can brag about it everywhere! This is the kind of thing you Israelites love to do,” says the Sovereign Lord. “I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you would not return to me,” says the Lord. (Amos 4:4-6)

  2. God requires our whole heart

Consequences of Idolatry
1. Generational curse
2. Poverty
3. Defeat
4. Failure
5. Wrath and judgement of God
6. Death

I pray God will deliver us from Idolatry in Jesus name
Because of our time, I will like to stop here
