Your Focus

I’ve mentioned before how addicted I was to the news when I was in business. On the hour, I listened to the news on one station and on the half hour, to another. And there was another station in the Cape that had a newscast 10 minutes before the hour. You could set your watch by my finger adjusting the radio stations for the news.
But I was shocked to find out that my addition was turning me into a negative person. I also started living in fear. The news had a terrible impact on my whole being and that wasn’t good. The ongoing bombardment of world events changed my focus.
One day I switched off the radio and it completely changed my life. I did not stress as much, especially about things I could not change. I was a happier person and it was easier to overcome the obstructions life put in my way.
Did the circumstances change? No! Did I change? Yes! For sure.
One small adjustment in my life. I changed my focus. Instead of focusing on the news, I started focusing on positive things. I started focusing on things where I could play a role.
Yes, life is still filled with negative stuff, but now I categorise them according to those I have to attend to, those I can attend to, and those I can’t do anything about.
I realised that if I’m only involved in positive stuff, if I could focus on making a difference in other people’s lives, it leaves no time to be tricked by the negative. The positive eliminates the negative. That changes your attitude and perspective on life, and, eventually, how you live.
1So, my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He’s the centrepiece of everything we believe, faithful in everything God gave him to do.
It’s a simple equation: If you adjust your focus to Jesus, things will go much better, because it leaves no time or space for the negative, for what is destructive. Even less does it influence your emotions to push you down.
Focus on Jesus. Allow the Holy Spirit to take the wheel of your life. Your life will change!
And don’t keep the good news to yourself. The world needs this message so much. We’ve known it for a long time and it’s not that sensational anymore, but for someone who’s never heard it before, it’s lifechanging news.
Jesus advocates for us with God. He won the case on our behalf. That’s why our debt has been taken away from us. We are free. We should focus on that.
Go and tell others.
Hebrews 3:1-6
What are you focussing on?
Where do you have to make a few adjustments?
How are you going to do it?

Father, I know Jesus must be the focus of my life. I know it will change my perspective on life. I know it will change me completely. But it’s hard. Please help me change my focus. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
